Celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a time to recognize, celebrate, and honor the history and important contributions and achievements of African Americans.

Throughout the month of February, Greenwich Library honors Black History Month with events and programs for all ages. Plus, our Librarians have put together lists of recommended books and music worth checking out.

Fiction: Contemporary to Classics

  • CLICK HERE for a staff-curated booklist that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to novels written by African Americans and people of color. You’ll find a selection of newly released fiction, as well as rediscovered classics. They are all worth your time!

Non-Fiction: The Black Experience

  • No one can better share a cultural experience than those who lived it themselves. CLICK HERE for a booklist that contains historical works, memoirs, and biographies that will help readers discover the rich range of the African-American experience. Music Primer: Jazz to Hip Hop

  • The influence of Black musicians is incalculable. From Jazz to Blues to Hip-Hop and so much more, African Americans have led the way, often in the face of huge odds. CLICK HERE for music selections that are a great place to start if you are interested in learning more.

Research Black History

  • ProQuest invites you to explore the new Black Freedom Struggle website, featuring expertly selected open primary source documents including historical newspaper articles, pamphlets, diaries, and correspondence in U.S. history marked by the opposition African Americans have faced on the road to freedom.
