Superman Smashes The Klan

Greenwich Library’s former YA Graphic Novel Discussion Group recommended the graphic novel, Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru’s Superman Smashes The Klan (also available on Hoopla), which is a compelling and exciting read. Set in 1946, Yang’s script (based on a 1940s Superman radio serial) focuses on the Chinese American Lee family, who face threats and physical attacks when they move into Metropolis, right near Daily Planet copyboy (and Superman’s pal) Jimmy Olsen. The two Lee children, Roberta & Tommy, soon discover that one of the kids in their neighborhood has a connection to the local Ku Klux Klan.

Meanwhile, Superman (and his alter ego Clark Kent) is on the trail of the Klan, while dealing with repressed memories that may affect his public image. And Roberta & Tommy’s father, Dr. Lee is discovering that his new boss at Metropolis’s Health Department is doing some potentially dangerous research… involving Superman!

In Superman Smashes The Klan, Yung and Gurihiru deliver a solid story that holds the reader’s attention from beginning to end. The characters are vivid and feel real, and the story leads to an exciting conclusion, with profound changes to several of the cast. Definitely check out Superman Smashes The Klan!
