The Cousins

The latest novel from Karen M. McManus, The Cousins, came out last month and is definitely worth reading! The plot centers on three cousins, Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah, who have apparently been invited by their reclusive grandmother, the rich and powerful Mildred Story, to spend the summer at her island resort. Years earlier, Mildred had disinherited the cousins’ parents with one strange sentence: “You know what you did!” The parents of course insist on the kids accepting the invitation.

But strange things start to happen. Mildred seemingly ignores the kids. One of the bartenders at the restaurant and the elderly local doctor drop mysterious hints about why the parents were disinherited, implying a connection to a tragic death two decades earlier. And one of the cousins isn’t really who they seem to be. But that’s okay because other characters are also posing as someone other than themselves. Can the cousins work out their differences and figure out what’s going on?

The author has Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah take turns narrating the story, with flashbacks in the third person to the 1990s (when the cousins’ parents were still teens) occasionally popping up. McManus weaves an exciting and, in the last few chapters, nail-biting suspenseful tale with a very intriguing last scene. You won’t want to put the book down while reading. Definitely check out The Cousins!
