The Host

Directed by Boon Joon Ho (Parasite), who co-wrote the screenplay with Won-jun Ha, The Host is ostensibly a film about a giant amphibian creature, created due to an arrogant American military pathologist’s ordering unsafe chemicals dumped into South Korea’s Han River, going on a rampage. But it’s also a terrific character study.

The film focuses on the efforts of seemingly slow-witted snack bar owner Park Gang-du (Song Kang-ho) and his family as they try to find and rescue Gang-du’s daughter Hyun-seo (Go Ah-sung) after the creature abducts her. Complicating the situation is the government’s declaring martial law after they claim the creature is supposedly host to a mysterious and deadly virus. Along the way, Gang-du manages to become more self-reliant and is able to help destroy the creature, but pays an awful price for his self-redemption.

Exciting, scary, and sometimes surprisingly funny (there’s lots of black humor), The Host is a terrific thriller that’ll hold your attention from start to finish. Check it out on hoopla!
